HOW IT BEGAN
It all started back in 1976, when Keith Murray met Stuart Birrell at Erith College of Technology while studying for their RICS direct exams.
Born just two weeks apart, their careers then followed an incredibly parallel path. Stuart and Keith passed Part 1, 2 and Final exams on the same day in consecutive years and then in 1981 they both passed the Test of Professional Competence, (as it was called then, now the APC) on the same day and then became Chartered on the same day in this year too.
Stuart began working at John Pelling & Partners and Keith then joined shortly after qualifying. They were both employed at Surveyor level at that time.
Subsequent to that, they both became; Senior Surveyors on the same day, then Associates on the same day and then Partners on the same day. They both then left Pellings on the same day, in November 1992, and started their own company, Murray Birrell, and have been in business together ever since.
Keith and Stuart also both became Fellows of the RICS in 1995, which will mean achieving an incredible 25 years in 2020 – a fantastic achievement.
Keith and Stuart continue to lead the business and do so alongside a very strong management team; David Betteridge, Sam Field and Peter Wade.
David Betteridge joined Murray Birrell in 2011 and he was promoted to the board as Director in 2015. Qualifying as a Chartered Surveyor in 1989, David has over 35-years’ experience in the property industry. David leads on Landlord and Tenant Matters, including Licence to Alter and Tenant Fit-Out Monitoring services. He attained Associate status with the Chartered Association of Building Engineers in 2014.
Sam Field joined the company in 2013 and has worked in private practice since 1996. He qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and is now Associate Director and Head of Construction. Sam is also qualified as an Incorporated Member of the Association for Project Safety and leads on all matters relating to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. He also specialises in Contract Administration, Associated Legal and Party Wall Matters, and Principal Designer duties.
Peter Wade joined Murray Birrell in 2014 and has specialised in conservation and historic buildings for over 20 years. He was one of the first surveyors to become accredited by the RICS and he became a Fellow in 1995. Peter is also a Consultant to the Almshouse Association and has worked on a large range of buildings.
