Murray Birrell firmly believes that the protection and comfort of every worker should be a top priority, and joining this initiative is an important step in addressing the shortcomings of personal protective equipment (PPE) across various industries.
The words of Sandi Rhys Jones OBE, current President of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), have resonated deeply with us: “It amazes me that we expect anyone to want to work in our industry when we can’t give them the basic kit to keep them safe.”
Beyond Comfort
Her advocacy for inclusive PPE highlights the urgency of providing workers with properly fitting and effective protective gear, a concern that extends far beyond mere comfort—it is a fundamental aspect of safety, productivity, and workplace dignity.
Katherine Evans, a geologist, also shared a powerful testimony that underscores the real-world impact of ill-fitting PPE:
“Manual handling was a massive challenge. Walking was painful and core logging on the floor was almost impossible, making me look disengaged, lazy and uncomfortable on-site, as if I didn’t want to be there, all of which couldn’t have been further from the truth.”
Katherine’s experience reflects a common but often overlooked issue—the damaging effect that inadequate PPE can have on an individual’s confidence, enthusiasm, and ultimately, career development.
Far-Reaching Issue
It’s important to note that this challenge is not limited to women. As Sandi Rhys Jones emphasised, "This isn’t just an issue faced by women, but also some men, where PPE isn’t compatible with body shape and size.” Additionally, the need for inclusive PPE extends to workers who wear religious headwear or other cultural clothing, which can complicate the fit and effectiveness of standard-issue equipment.
Be Part of the Solution
By signing the inclusive PPE pledge with SHP, Murray Birrell Chartered Surveyors aims to be part of the solution. SHP is raising awareness through personal stories, industry reports, and expert discussions via webinars and podcasts. These initiatives provide invaluable insight into how companies and manufacturers are making strides in developing more inclusive PPE.
Murray Birrell will also work to ensure that all of our employees—regardless of gender, body type, or cultural needs—are equipped with protective gear that allows them to do their jobs safely and comfortably. We regularly check all PPE to ensure it is replaced before reaching its expiry date. We also have the choice of fitted high-visibility gear and helmets are ordered to meet individual requirements.
Safety is not a one-size-fits-all concept, and together, we can drive meaningful change that benefits every worker across the industry.
Supporting Inclusion
By addressing the issue of ill-fitting PPE, we not only protect our surveyors physically but also foster a culture of inclusion, confidence, and long-term career development. Let’s ensure that no one’s potential is held back by inadequate safety equipment.
